A few years ago our Team received a phone call in which a local homeowner thought that there was a ground hog in her attic. She was certain that she had seen a ground hog go under her house. She then heard a noise in the attic.

Groundhogs can and do climb at will. My experience led me to think that it was likely a raccoon, or squirrel or anything other than a groundhog

We made our way to her house. We opened the under house crawl space door. To our amazement there were muddy ground hog tracks on the metal furnace duct work that led to her attic. I still had doubts.

I set a trap under the house. Early the next day the homeowner called to tell me that she was sure that there was an animal in the trap.

To my amazement it was a groundhog. The animal was removed and the attic sounds disappeared.

So what's a homeowner to do? Here are some basic tips to keep your home critter free:

1. Keep grass mowed and trees trimmed around your house. Squirrels and raccoon can climb to your roof top by climbing up brick walls and downspouts. However, they often climb nearby trees and onto your roof from branches that over hang your house. Tree branches should be trimmed back at least 15 feet from your house. Tall grass can hide entrance holes, tunnels, and tracks.

2. Periodically walk around the perimeter of your house. It's much easier to keep animals out than trap them once they enter your house.

3. Call Headley's Wildife Control as soon as you hear noises or suspect that you have an animal inside your house.
